Sanctuary of Hope 2601 Ridge Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66102-4617 Telephone (913) 321-4673
The primary purpose of Sanctuary of Hope is to provide a prayer and retreat center in the heart of our inner city of Kansas City, Kansas. The family that supports this purpose is a contemplative, ecumenical community committed to knowing, loving and serving God, each other and those in need. “This is what God asks of you: only this, to act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8).
FIVE GOALS for the Sanctuary of Hope: 1. Sanctuary of Hope, a contemplative community in Kansas City, Kansas, desires to have a place where the community and guests can have quiet and rest to meet God, each other and one's true self. We quote Our Lord: "Be still and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:11).
2. Sanctuary of Hope, ecumenical in nature, welcomes all and longs to communicate to our guests the myriad of option in people, programs and organizations to help them take the next step of growth in their new life. We quote a young man in recovery from St. Paul, Minnesota who said: “You can’t worry about the Past, it is over; and the Future isn’t here yet; what’s important is to accept the gift of today; that’s why they call it the ‘Present.’”
3. Sanctuary of Hope, a fragile community of human beings, is grounded in the presence of God and follows a rule of life for the members and house rules for the guests. We quote a giant of Faith, St. Vincent de Paul: "All rules lead to love.”
4. Sanctuary of Hope, committed to knowing, loving and serving, seeks to enable a person to discover their own innate goodness, their dreams and aspirations. We quote the title of a recent daily meditation book: “The Blues Ain’t Nothing, but a Good Soul Feeling Bad.”
5. Sanctuary of Hope, acting justly, loving tenderly and walking humbly, gratefully assumes the guidance to nourish the soul and heart in all of us. We quote a bit of wisdom from the faith journey of one of our members: “It’s possible to listen a soul into existence.”
CO-PATRONS: Since Mary is a model for the above “Mission Statement,” it was decided to place the Sanctuary under the special patronage of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. This was the name of the first African-American Parish in the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas in the city of Kansas City, Kansas. (We do not want this title to be lost.) Also this name for Mary, tells us that we have a woman, a mother, a friend, a sister in Mary, who is always interceding for us. It is the role of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to assist us in any need in order for us to come closer to God, each other and our true self. Since the one adjective that best describes our mission at Sanctuary of Hope is "healing," we have chosen the Archangel Raphael as a co-patron of Sanctuary of Hope. We chose St. Raphael because the name means: "the medicine (or healing) of God."
